How to create your own sanctuary at home

With the chaos and upheaval of 2020, it’s never been more important to create a space within your home that allows you to completely switch off and relax away from the outside world. Whether that’s creating a cosy reading corner for some all-important ‘me time’, refreshing your bedroom to ensure the sweetest of dreams, or updating your living room so you and your loved ones have a comfy space to snuggle up and chill out together.

With this in mind, we’ve pulled together our tips on how to create your very own sanctuary this autumn. So sit back with a hot steaming cuppa and allow us to transport you to a whole new world of comfort…

Go for refined glamour

Adding luxurious touches to your home is the perfect way to make a space feel more welcoming and creates the perfect place to unwind after a long day. We love nothing more than reclining on a sumptuous velvet sofa. Not only does velvet create a strikingly luxe look but its soft and tactile nature makes it a dream to cosy up on.
Another way to introduce that touch of luxury is with the use of a rich colour palette on the walls or within your upholstery. Deep blues and rich terracotta tones are two of our favourite shades this season and will instantly fill a room with warmth. Restrict your colour scheme to one or two strong shades to ensure your space doesn’t feel chaotic and retains a sense of tranquillity. By introducing scatter cushions and lush throws in similar tones of your core colour palette, you with add depth and bring the whole scheme together.

Introduce calming pastel tones

We love the calming effect of soft pink hues and have spotted them being used more and more within interiors as a fresh alternative to the more common neutral palettes of greys and creams. These delightful tones add a sense of depth yet retain a level of freshness which creates a welcoming space to sit back and relax in. Use these warming tones on your main upholstery pieces, or on accent chairs, footstools or scatter cushions and throws for a more subtle touch.

Bring the outside in

Over the last few months, we’ve been given the opportunity to reconnect with nature and appreciate the benefits that the outdoors brings to us. Whether it’s rambling through the woods, heading down to the coast or simply going for a stroll in the park, the benefits of fresh air and sunshine to our mental and physical well being have never been so apparent.
Create your very own paradise at home by introducing all the wonderful elements of nature into your interiors. We love seeing the way houseplants and freshly cut flowers are increasingly taking over people’s homes (the more, the merrier as far as we’re concerned!), but that’s not the only way to be inspired by the great outdoors. Inject forest greens and ocean blues into a relatively neutral space with scatter cushions and other accessories, or opt for a striking botanical print on an accent chair, such as our new Palm fabric designed exclusively for us by BIBA, to bring the outdoors in.

Enhance the ambience

Getting the lighting right can completely transform a space and create a cosy sanctuary – perfect for snuggling up in on chilly autumn nights. Ambient lighting is the perfect way to create your very own retreat – adding radiance and sophistication to a space and creating the perfect atmosphere for relaxation. We love the use of an understated floor or wall lamp to create a beautiful soft glow, or the addition of a simple oversized rattan shade to disperse the rays of light, softening the illumination of the room.
