The Modern Botanical Trend

After first seeing the botanical trend take centre stage last year we knew it wouldn’t just be a passing craze. As we approach spring the botanical trend seems to be as popular as ever – and no wonder. Nature has a persistent influence over design, even in urban environments, and inspires us to think cleaner, eat healthier and live greener. Often characterised by big, brash jungle-themed motifs, the trend doesn’t just limit itself to tropical designs, but also extends to prints that evoke English gardens with muted palettes as well. It’s all about merging your interior with the outside, bringing life to your space in whichever way you choose. Read on for our favourite ways to style this trend…

Make a statement

The continuing trend for botanical prints means there are a myriad of modern ways to bring a lush and leafy freshness to your home. A bold print works wonderfully as a wallpaper and makes a real statement, adding texture and personality to a space.

This Cole & Son print brings tropical charm and a beautiful texture, contrasting with the block colour of the wall behind. We’ve layered the wallpaper with other shades of green and teal, including our Percy armchair in our Deep Turquoise velvet, and added metallic accessories to give the space some depth. Alternatively, you can keep your backdrop cool and clean and fill your home with natural greenery instead. The crisp white wall of this space balances the flourishes of greenery throughout, communicating peace and harmony as well as creating a exceedingly beautiful space.

Use furniture as a canvas

Weave in bold, botanical furniture into your scheme with patterned fabrics and designs that draw upon nature’s most inspiring colours and shapes.

Our latest Design Lab collaboration with textile designer Imogen Heath fully embraces the botanical trend, combining a painterly floral with a modern graphic. Inspired by bell-flowers that were growing in her own back garden Imogen designed the traditional-style Leaves print which pairs beautifully with the more modern Geometric design. The fabric looks beautiful on our Fingal sofa and armchair creating a blur between the interior and the lush garden outside. If you’d like to keep the colour of your sofa simple, simply use a bold botanical print on a cushion instead. The botanical trend isn’t just limited to modern homes. Floral motifs also work in more muted hues that lend that lend themselves well to traditional spaces.

Carefully curated by the in-house design team, our Showcase Collection features two striking prints; a traditional Arts and Crafts inspired floral design, ‘Botanical’, and a contemporary spotted pattern, ‘Dots’. Inspired by the work of William Morris, Botanical has a dusty pink floral pattern that weaves in well with the light greys and blues of the other fabrics.

Use house plants

If you’re not entirely sold on committing to the botanical trend, why not simply give a nod to it with a selection of house plants? Plants bring that natural element into a room and have become a staple in every stylish home.

They quite literally breathe life into an interior by not only filtering out every day pollutants but by releasing oxygen as well. Mix larger, leafy plants like spider plants and palm leafs with pops of colourful orchids or begonias (which all thrive in warm environments with little air movement) to bring a little tropical feel to your space.
