Interior Design Tips

How to: perfect pattern in your home

Patterns and prints can help transform the look or feel of a room in an instant. Whether you’re looking to create a calming atmosphere using floral patterns or to add a dramatic appeal and brighten up the look of your room with bold, bright colours – adding pattern to your interior is a simple, yet effective way, to refresh the style of your living space.

For our SS18 collection, we have collaborated with five exceptional designers as part of our Design Lab series, each providing their own take on perfect patterns with their upholstery fabrics and complementing home accessories adding further vibrancy, energy and beautiful colour choice to our current collection.

For inspiration on adding pattern to your home, we’re taking a closer look at our Design Lab partners and their patterned fabrics.

Block pattern with Tamasyn Gambell

Adding blocked patterns to a home can instantly steal your attention when you walk into a room.  The dramatic effect can be used to instantly lift the appeal of a room but can easily be incorporated in smaller details, such as scatter cushions, making a statement simply on their own. If you’re ready to go big, an accent chair in a vibrant pattern can liven up any area of the home, whether it’s a living room, bedroom or even a hallway.

Tamasyn’s fabrics, Textured Stripe and Abstract Stripe, offer clean lines in exciting colourways that lend themselves perfectly to providing your room with accents of a pattern where your eyes can easily rest. Remember, not to overdo the amount of pattern introduced into one room otherwise it can easily lose its benefit and appeal.

Vibrant patterns with Gail Bryson

If you’re faced with wall to wall neutrals and are looking for something to add instant visual appeal, our energetic collaboration with Gail Bryson provides the fabrics to do just this. The decorative patterns and bold colourways provide a vibrant, mood lifting atmosphere to a room with solid colour.  Gail’s revitalising fabrics, Trill and Soni, and cushions, Twist and Kantha, use repetitive print patterns to create playful and eye-catching interiors which can be used as big or as small as you require.

Adding solid colour with colourful patterns offer balance to your room. Our Jasper corner sofa in Cyan Smart linen provides the perfect canvas for Gail’s Twist cushions and Stack rug (both in Yolk) to stand out

Stripes with Zoe Glencross

Traditionally, vertical stripes create a soft look that is classic and beautiful, and Zoe’s Slade Stripe and chevron styled Mottram Meadow fabrics are no exception.  Stripes are often considered a good place to start when adding pattern to your home, as they can be used to add interest to your home with ease.  If you are using your sofa as a focal point in the room, use subtle accessories to create a cohesive effect that still draws your attention to your marvellous new striped centrepiece, with the look of your room still feeling complete.

Avoid using colours that clash, stripes provide enough detail and attention on their own, so aim to use selective colours that complement each other – like Zoe’s Anchor and Pink Grapefruit colourways that work wonderfully with the wider dominant colour against the thinner lighter colours.

Match your patterns to create an eclectic look that still harnesses a classic sense of style

Take pattern to the floor! Rugs are a great way to play with stripes as they add a graphic element to a room with neutral upholstery if you want a toned down patterned look

Subtle pattern with Tori Murphy

Patterned fabric doesn’t always have to be the centre of attention. Small, repetitive patterns in a subtle colourway can create a classic, pared-back look that’ll work well within a minimalistic setting.  Tori’s patterns, which have been inspired by an English garden, provide a versatile way to add layers of texture and colour to your home.  These fabrics work well on larger pieces of upholstery or as a full suite in your home.

Even a scaled-back interior with soft tones can benefit from the use of subtle pattern and create a calming atmosphere with added style
