Teal Appeal: 5 ways to master this bold hue

We think teal is the perfect bold shade if you’re looking to add some personality to your home. It combines that vivid pop of colour whilst still retaining a neutral element that allows you to dress it up or down. Read on to find out our favourite ways to use this bold hue in the home. Teal sits somewhere between blue and green on the colour spectrum, two very versatile and popular shades when it comes to interior designing. Slightly more subdued and sophisticated than a turquoise and more vibrant than a simple green, teal gives you a great base to play with. Whether you use it on large scale items or smaller accessories, it’s a great colour for injecting a bit of personality and warmth into your home.

  1. Use teal on large pieces of furniture

Teal is fantastic because it combines the character of a bright colour with the simplicity of a neutral. It’s vibrant, it’s bold, it’s colourful but it doesn’t take too much attention away from other pieces around the room. For instance take our Avery bed, seen below in Deep Turquoise cotton matt velvet. Sit against a soft neutral backdrop, accessorize with some scatter cushions and colourful bedding and the room immediately feels like it’s been brought to life.

If you are after something more bold and eye catching, pair a teal shade against a dramatic and dark backdrop. Make sure you opt for a lighter hue to avoid making your space seem too dark (we added a few bright cushions as well). Again, we love the velvet texture of the fabric in this picture – it adds to the richness of the colour and makes the Isla chaise look even more sumptuous and inviting. The jewel tone of our Neptune smart velvet stands out against the dark backdrop better than any neutral ever could.

  1. A sprinkling of scatter cushions

If you’re not quite sold on using teal on larger items, why not opt for a sprinkling of teal scatter cushions instead. Why not accessorize with teal cushions on a contrasting coloured sofa to bring another colourway into the room? We love how the scatter cushions and footstool combine to bring a darker, jewel toned dimension in the below image, featuring our Isla sofa in Orchid cotton matt velvet.

  1.  Teal feature walls

Vikki Montalban, from VM Design, says “not all rooms need [a feature wall], but they are a great tool to balance the shape of a room and to manage focus in a space. For example, as a contrast to draw attention to a headboard, or a dark wall to de-emphasise a TV screen.” We think this bedroom does just that. This beautifully designed Rattan bed really stands out against the dark teal wall and the rest of the room is very light and bright which enables this statement wall to speak for itself.

Teal also provides a great backdrop for other colours to stand out. Whilst grey tones often fade into the background, in the below image the Remy sofa and Georgette footstool in Windermere cotton matt velvet stand out when sat in front of a dark teal backdrop.

  1. Lighting

Pendant lights are stylish and dramatic and bring plenty of personality to any room. They can be used to transform a hallway, or create ‘zones’ within a space. Curiousa & Curiousa do a brilliant selection of colourful pendants, including this seven dropped pendant chandelier, which features a beautiful teal glass design.

The right lighting can also help to draw attention to a teal backdrop or teal feature within the room. As shown below, our Elton ceiling pendant has a minimalist sillhouette, with clear glass and a soft warm glow, brightening up the teal backdrop and making a statement.

5. Teal Accents

Maybe all you’re after is hint of teal! In the below shot, the teal throw and scatter cushion is enough to prevent the room from feeling too overpowered by the Saturday sofa in Peony cotton matt velvet.
