Creating a child-friendly home with @thehousethatblackbuilt

Where it all began…

Interior guru, Chelsea Stonier aka @thehousethatblackbuilt has mastered a blend of modernity and timeless Victorian style, building a home that’s chic and classic. A unique account name, we wanted to dive into the inspiration behind the name…

“When renovating our first house (back in 2015!) it took a long time to find our style. It’s when we finally started to use the colour black – which I was originally too nervous to do – that we felt like we’d finally found it. Hence, the house that black built.

“Admittedly, in our current house we haven’t used as much black, and my style has definitely evolved but it’s what gave me the confidence to do what I loved, not what everyone else was doing so it remains relevant to me. Plus I’ll always have a little bit of black in every room!”

Mastering renovation

A lick of paint here and new furniture there… curating a stylish home can seem straight forward. Yet as those who have crossed the waters of renovation will know: creating a home that works for you is harder than it seems! Here’s the tips that Chelsea learnt when developing her most recent project.

“I’d say live in the space for as long as you can before you make any decisions/start renovating. We are currently undoing some of the first work we did when we moved in because we rushed into it and made a few mistakes. Start a Pinterest board to gather inspiration for what you like – refer back to it as your making decisions to make sure you’re keeping on track. It’s easy to be swayed by current trends but you’ll love your home for longer if you stick to what YOU like.”

Love that lasts

Family life constantly evolves, with needs changing from year to year making interior design tricky. Chelsea shares her key choices and how she’s created growing room in her space.

“We made sure our storage would be suitable for much longer than just the baby stage, so it will last much longer – decorating with a baby/toddler isn’t easy! I wanted built in storage that looked in keeping with our home and could grow with our baby.”

“We’ve kept our colours neutral – because that’s our thing – but also for the room to be a calming space. I don’t want to stimulate the baby just before bedtime. I tend to layer neutrals but if I did want to add a pop of colour, it’s easy to do that with art work and soft furnishings – and, more importantly, change it easily again when I’ve inevitably had enough. Oh and black out blinds are also a must for a nursery!”

Around the clock comfort

When creating a family home, practicality should always be a priority. From additional of storage to maximising comfort and ensuring easy maintenance, your day to day essentials should be considered. @thehousethatblackbuilt has achieved a pragmatic interior without deterring from her sophisticated style.

The Otto Sofa Bed

“I thought a sofa bed would be a great use of the extra space for a multitude of reasons (eg. extra bed for guests or if one of us needs a break during hard nights, perfect spot for story time snuggles) The Otto is just like my style – a modern take on traditional style, so I knew it would work perfectly in our Victorian home. I love the effortless, ‘lived-in’ look of the linen fabric and fully remove-able covers are a no-brainer with a kiddo!”

The Ginger Armchair & Luna Storage Footstool

“I LOVE the shape of the Ginger armchair. It’s so unusual, such a stylish focal point and so comfortable; especially for nursing. The boucle fabric suits it so well and I feel like it’s the perfect aesthetic for a nursery; lovely fluffy, cloud-like texture. I chose the Luna footstool in the Oyster boucle to match so it intentionally looked like a set. Somewhere to put your feet up AND the extra storage is essential.”

Making a house a home

“As cheesy as it sounds, the people make a home! If you want to talk design wise though, it’s all the finishing touches and a lived in feel – artwork, photos, soft furnishings, trinkets and things that mean something to you. Embrace the water marks on the marble, scuffs on skirting boards and half melted candles. A home that looks lived-in is the sign of memories being made. This is the stage that we are at now, finally adding elements that make it look and feel like home – rather than a building site.”

Fabric vs Leather sofas: Which is better?

Aside from size, colour and style, there’s one big dilemma to address when choosing a new sofa – should you pick a leather or fabric sofa?

There have been various showdowns over the years. Wallpaper versus paint… carpet or flooring… blinds taking on curtains. Ask which is better – a leather or fabric sofa – and it can be equally contentious.

Both a leather and fabric sofa will provide many benefits. Let’s look at the pros and cons of each of these materials, as fabric squares up to leather in the battle of the sofas.

Leather or fabric: Which is better for a sofa?

There are differing views on what’s the best fabric for sofas. It really is a matter of personal  opinion, what’s most important to you, and the look and feel you want to achieve.

Many opt for leather because it’s durable, stain resistant and low maintenance. Leather is also elegant and timeless; a material icon that transcends passing trends. There are many reasons why leather is regarded by some as the best material for a sofa.

On the other hand, fabric sofas are synonymous with softness and cosiness. There are many types and they’re available in limitless colour options, patterns and textures.

With technology providing benefits like extra durability, stain resistance and colour longevity, fabric sofas are giving good old leather a run for its money.

Why choose a leather sofa?

Leather is a natural, water-resistant material that has long been a material of choice for interior spaces the world over.

From classic masterpieces to contemporary luxury leather sofas, timeless leather equally looks the part in a modern abode as it does in a stately home or grand hotel.

Advantages of a Leather Sofa

Stain resistant Leather stands up to most food or drink stains and spills, thanks to the tanning process.

Low maintenance A quick wipe with a damp cloth is usually enough to keep a leather sofa clean and gleaming.

Hypoallergenic It will repel dust mite, pet hairs and other allergens, which can sometimes collect in fabric sofas.

Premium and luxury Stylish and good-looking, leather will always add a touch of elegance to any setting.

Sustainable

Disadvantages of a Leather Sofa

Higher cost A leather sofa tends to be more expensive than a fabric counterpart.

Not scratch resistant They can be scratched easily by sharp objects. Luckily here at sofa.com, all of our 100% Italian leather sofas have a protective coating.

Less choice If you want a specific colour match or you like patterns, leather will offer you fewer options.

Temperature sensitive On a very warm day, a leather sofa will absorb heat and could feel sticky while in winter it may feel on the chillier side.

Why choose a fabric sofa?

From breathable soft cottons and linens to classic weaves, to sumptuous velvet and chenille, there’s a fabric for every budget and taste.

Today’s fabric sofas are designed for the tough demands of modern living and offer multiple customised options.

Advantages of a Fabric Sofa

More affordable A fabric sofa will be less expensive than the same sofa upholstered in leather.

More choice There are multiple materials, colours, patterns and textures, making it easy to match your décor – check out our amazing array of options at sofa.com

Cosy and comfy Fabric sofas are generally viewed as more comfortable and inviting than leather.

Lighter A fabric sofa will tend to weigh less, so a sensible choice if you’re on the move a fair bit.

Disadvantages of a Fabric Sofa

Less durable A fabric sofa may need replacing sooner than a leather one, although performance fabrics will provide extra durability.

Prone to stains Sometimes a damp cloth is not enough to get rid of a spill or stain, so you may have to remove the covers to wash or call in a specialist cleaner.

Watch out for allergies Some fabrics can collect dust and pet hairs, although there are hypoallergenic options.

Wear and tear costs They can prove more expensive in the long run if their covers need replacing due to wear and tear.

Leather vs fabric couch: Which lasts longer?

Leather is likely to last slightly longer than your typical fabric sofa. It’s a highly durable material with strong fibres, making it very robust. You can expect a good one to last 15 to 20 years.

Depending on the material you choose, a fabric sofa could last anything from five years to 15 years before it needs replacing. However, there are some fabrics that can last longer.

For example, canvas, like leather, is very durable, while fabrics like natural wool or cotton linen might require more care.

Bear in mind that the sofa frame, joinery, upholstery filling and interior mechanisms like springs will also contribute to how long a sofa will last.

Choosing the Best Sofa Material for Your Home

So, there we have it. The leather vs fabric sofa dilemma – which one you go for will come down to individual taste, your priorities and lifestyle.

A leather sofa is stylish, durable, resistant to stains and spills, low-maintenance, and will repel allergens. However, it can be pricier, there’s less choice, it’s a little vulnerable to scratches, and it can feel more inviting at times than others.

If you want a luxurious look above all, and one that lasts the test of time, you can’t really go wrong with a leather sofa.

However, with sofa technology advancing all the time, fabric is certainly no underdog in this showdown of sofas.

You will have myriad choice, it’s always inviting and versatile, and it’s also likely to be easier on the wallet. However, it might be slightly less durable, more prone to spills and stains without protection, less dust repellent, and you might have to replace covers if they wear out. But if cosiness, comfort, choice and cost are your main considerations, a fabric sofa will be the perfect host. There are plenty of options that give you both luxury and performance.

How to style an L-shape sofa

Whether you want to create a cosy corner or zone a living space into defined functional areas, an L-shaped sofa, otherwise known as a chaise, is a sofa boasting laidback lounging with a capital L. Offering endless possibilities, its the perfect choice whatever the size of the room or gathering.

Nothing ever seems too much for this powerhouse of a sofa, which has become one of the most popular choices for those looking for ample, sociable seating with plenty of flexibility, comfort and style.

But your first thoughts might be, what exactly is one, where should you place it in a room, and how do you assemble an L-shaped sofa to get the most from what it has to offer? The good news is that it’s easy as ABC.

What are L-Shaped Sofas?

As the name clearly suggests, these sofas are designed in the shape of a capital letter ‘L’.

Originally designed during Victorian times, the first L-shaped sofas were typically made from wood with intricately carved, ornate details.

Over the years, these sofas have evolved into a wide array of designs – from traditional to contemporary harnessing all shapes, sizes and fabrics.

Since the 1950s, when sectional sofas started appearing on the scene, the L-shaped sofa has come into its own of late, seeing a meteoric rise in popularity. A sectional sofa comprises at least two adjoining sections that can connect with a simple click mechanism – and taken apart.

Designed to provide ample, stylish seating with a high degree of flexibility, L-shaped sofas come in various configurations with the ‘L’ either on the left or right-hand side depending on which side of a room you want to place it.

They can have an armrest at both ends, an arm on one section with a classic-style chaise on the opposite end, no arms at either end for ultimate slouching… the options are plentiful.

Also known as a corner sofa due to its ability to fit neatly and snugly into a nook, this right-angled hero can be arranged to suit individual needs and provides seating for small or large gatherings of half a dozen or more.

Ways to Arrange an L-Shaped Sofa

Whatever the type, style and layout of your home and the size of your rooms – traditional or contemporary, big or small – there’s an L-shaped sofa for it.

For modern living spaces, the L-shaped sofa has become one of the go-to pieces of furniture, particularly due to the rise in popularity of open plan living, taken over in more recent times by broken plan living.

  • Broken plan living offers all the benefits of open plan living, but with distinct zones offering more privacy and greater functionality.
  • An L-shaped sofa can be used to cleverly style, demarcate and break up individual areas, like a work-from-home office, dining zone, or play den.

In a more traditional layout or smaller living space, making use of a corner is one of the most popular and conventional ways of arranging an L-shaped sofa.

  • Place an L-shaped sofa in a corner and it avoids wasting dead space or eating into the rest of the room any more than necessary.
  • It also frees up the immediate area around it for furniture like a stylish coffee table or ottoman to create a warm, inviting and functional retreat tucked away from the rest of the world.
  • Add an armchair or loveseat on the opposite side and you instantly have an intimate, sociable circle.
  • Nestled against a window wall, either in a corner or with one arm of the L-shaped sofa serving to divide a space or form a boundary next to a doorway, imagine soaking up the sunrays while reading a book or enjoying a cuppa.

In a larger living space, you can make a real style statement by placing an L-shaped sofa right in the middle that will create a focal point, make an ample room feel cosier and bring a heightened sense of togetherness.

This is a perfect arrangement if you love to entertain guests or spend time with all the family at once, as it will make everyone feel like they’re at the heart of the home and the centre of everything.

How to Arrange Cushions on an L-Shaped Sofa

Don’t forget to give thought about how to arrange cushions on an L-shaped sofa.

A good rule of thumb is to create a strong base and fill the corner first, which the eye is always drawn to, layering in size with the largest cushion at the back.

A smaller L-shaped sofa will usually happily welcome up to four to six cushions, while a large corner sofa can take as many as 10. Drape a throw or two for casual chicness.

Why Choose an L-Shaped Sofa

With an L-shaped sofa, the world’s your oyster.

It will maximise your space, making a room work as hard as it can to provide as much seating as possible while providing a super-stylish aesthetic that’s pleasing to the eye.

Want comfort? It doesn’t get better than an L-shaped sofa. With high backs, sumptuous cushions, padded arms, room to stretch out – and even reclining and footrest options to add into the mix – your sofa experience will be sheer indulgence and bliss.

Whether it’s movie night with the kids or a cocktail evening chatting with friends, an L-shaped sofa will be the host with the most. Friendly and sociable, this sofa knows everything there is to know about how to entertain in style.

Versatile, flexible and stylish, no job is too much for this smooth, handsome operator, always at the ready to please and impress.

As we increasingly look to add individual personality to our homes with customisable solutions that aim to make the day-to-day easier all-round, L-shaped sofas are here to stay.

A trusty, multi-tasking companion for the long-haul that never disappoints whatever life’s challenges, remember this sofa supremo is like the perfect partner:

  • Versatile – whatever the occasion, it will be a gracious and willing host
  • Flexible – it’s happy to adapt and change plans as needs arise
  • Ample – however many people, it will be just as accommodating
  • Comfortable – robust and snug, it was made for chilling out with
  • Stylish – classic or contemporary, it’s good looking and visually pleasing
  • Sociable – this sofa oozes charisma and loves your family and friends as much as you

Choosing the Right Shape

Sofas are typically the heart of a room, where family and friends gather for quality time; and therefore, it’s an important decision!

Aside from the design, size, shape and shade of the sofa itself, you may question where it will go, how it will be used, and the existing colour scheme of the room.

The necessary function of the sofa may play into whether its a chaise, corner, modular or sofa bed while your existing interior may determine whether it’s classic & curved, or contemporary & angular? Consider your lifestyle too: Do you often host large groups and does the fabric have to be particularly hard-wearing for children and pets?

Stylish Colour Schemes for a Blue Sofa

A classic colour, blue has graced homes for centuries, from dark heritage hues to contemporary smoky blue-greys. So in case your questioning the longevity of a coloured sofa… blue is certainly timeless. Not to mention, experts predict it will dominate interiors in 2024!

Often associated with serenity and nature, blue is a neutral hue known for its calming effect on emotions. Think turquoise sea waves or woodland bluebells; it’s no wonder blue is regarded by many as the Shangri-La of shades.

Colours for Decorating Navy Sofas

Smart and sophisticated navy will look incredible with bold punches of red, pink, orange, green or yellow, as well as gentler hues such as dusky pink and soft apricot, along with relaxing neutrals like beige, grey and cream.

As in the ocean, shades of blue work beautifully together so teal, cornflower and sky blues will add layers of visual interest to a navy sofa.

Matching Colours for Duck Egg Blue Sofa

Combine a sofa draped in duck egg blue with warm neutrals like beige, grey and off white or dainty pastels.

Turquoise or delicate greens also work particularly well with this shade, as does a deeper hue of blue for a fresh coastal vibe. You’ll want to dive in.

What Cushions Go with a Blue Sofa: Tips and Ideas

The right scatter cushions will enhance the look and feel of any sofa, adding depth, dimension, colour, shape, texture and extra comfort, but how do you accessorise a blue sofa?

For a modern, minimalist look, go to town with one colour like an elegant grey using a plain monochrome cushion arrangement.

Block colouring – pairing shades that are colour wheel opposites like blue and orange or yellow and purple, or a combination – is another option.

Mix-and-match patterns, like bold stripes placed next to whimsical florals, will give bags of character to a blue sofa.

Choosing Throw Pillows for Your Blue Sofa

Decorative throw pillows will add an extra layer of colour, texture, comfort and personality to a sofa.

From square linen shams to round beauties harnessing exquisite velvet or chenille, these carefree wonders will take your sofa style up a notch and bring the room together when scattered around.

Tassels and piped edges can jazz up an otherwise reserved sofa in an instant or max out a maximalist design.

Cushion Colour Ideas for Dark Blue Sofas

A dark blue sofa adds drama and glamour to any room.

You can let it set the tone and complement with a neutral palette of cushions or you can go for a bright colour contrast that ensures your sofa is the centre of attention.

Hues that hit the spot somewhere in the middle like an inviting soft pink will also provide a winning combination.

Go bold with… Alanna Nicole

The Marrakesh room: Alanna Nicole on her Romy Modular Sofa in Dusty Rose

Scrolling through digital creator Alanna Doherty’s Instagram, her keen eye for colour and eclectic flare is clear, and in abundance. Known for her statement style, we explored her home and studio to see if her artistic aesthetic extended into her interiors… spoiler: they do!

Delve in as we discover the inspiration behind her bold looks built around our Romy & Tiffany sofas, as well as where she developed her passion for fashion and her tips for elevating your interior…

When Alanna met fashion…

“I’ve loved clothes since I was a little girl playing dress up in my mother’s closet in Barbados! My mom has amazing style so it only made sense that I would also love fashion. I’ve experimented with many many styles over the years from all-black minimalist (if you can believe it!) to full of colour and prints. I’ve absolutely LOVED exploring my style through it all, it’s been so fun!”

In a world where everyone is making an effort towards sustainability, deciding on a statement piece that you’ll still love for years to come can be a tricky task; Alanna shares how she knows she’s found the one… “One, when I can’t stop thinking about it! And two, for fashion, when I know I’ll be able to incorporate it into my existing wardrobe and have a lot of wear! If I’m only going to wear something once, I’ll leave it or try to rent it!”

Inspiration is key

While Alanna’s playful interior may look effortlessly artful, the key to any curated interior is tapping into inspiration; whether this comes from vogue icons or vibrant places. “I certainly get a lot of style inspiration from colourful countries like Barbados, Morocco and Portugal! I love going to a place where colour surrounds you – from the plants to the colours of buildings. I’m also a massive fan of Tracee Ellis Ross and Solange! Both of these women just exude style and play with colour and various silhouettes in the best way possible!”

“My interiors are just as, if not more, colourful than my outfits are! In the same way that I’m inspired by going to colourful countries, I want my immediate environment to inspire me too! I take tons of inspo for my interiors from colour combinations that I’ve already tried in my outfits and certainly different textures and shapes, too! I love scrolling on Pinterest to find interiors inspo – it truly is the best place. I find that even though the trend now is this minimal aesthetic, on Pinterest colourful interiors are still very much appreciated there!”

Creating a happy space

In recent times, interiors have seen a surge of maximalism for the everyday; eclecticism doesn’t have to engulf your whole home, for some, small playful pieces is enough to reveal a little personality.

“The vision was to go wild with the terracotta moment! When I visited Marrakech I fell in love with the natural terracotta colour that you see on most buildings there and knew that I needed a space that made me feel as happy as I was when I visited! On the walls, on the ceiling, even the Romy couch is in the closest colour that I could find to match! Then find accents that truly compliment that base colour and make you feel like you could be in someone’s house in Marrakech! All of the little trinkets that I brought home from my trip truly make the room feel like heaven!”

Found the one(s)

“The Tiffany was the first couch that I received from sofa.com and it made me fall in love with the brand! The blush pink colour is so luxurious and truly warms up my home! Plus it’s massive enough that both my partner and I can lay out while watching tv!!! The Romy, which I have in my studio, is truly my dream couch! It’s a couch that just looks yummy when you see it, especially in the room that I’ve designed for it! It’s such a deep and comfortable couch but also looks INSANE in photographs!”

“I want that when people visit this room that they feel inspired to create but also feel really warm and cosy. I would loveee for my granny to be able to come and see it! She is an incredible artist and lives in Barbados so hopefully she can come one day and add some art to the space!”

Elevating your home?

“Painting your walls and ceiling is a fabulous way to switch up and elevate a space! It can also be quite cost effective as opposed to re-furnishing the entire space! Find a colour that you love in your existing space and make a bold moment out of it! Alternatively, switching out a couch is a great way to transform your space while keeping other existing pieces! You could even use the shape of the new couch as inspiration to rearrange your space and give it a whole new life!”

“I’m loving different shades on blue at the moment, which is very odd for me! Normally I find blue too cold since I’m more of a pink, orange and yellow lover but something about the right shade of blue that’s slightly dark and vibrant is speaking to me! The next room that i’m designing in my studio is actually based on this! I’m not sure which colour exactly for 2024 but I certainly hope that people are inspired to wear more colour, especially in the colder months! We need the vibrancy to get us through it!”

The story behind the Romy…

Reena Simon (@hygge_for_home) comfy on our collaborative sofa: The Romy

Bringing Reena Simon aka @hygge_for_home‘s vision to life began some time ago. Flourishing from Reena’s love for sofa.com‘s comfy designs which she enjoyed for years with her family; we blended her beautiful Scandi inspired style with the expertise of our inhouse design team, to create the Romy.

Hygge, a term that lies at the heart of Reena’s brand as well as our newest design, is a Scandinavian term which denotes cosiness, comfortable conviviality and contentment that nourishes our well being. On a mission to share her tips and knowledge on building a cosy home, Reena began her own interior journey while transforming a 1960’s bungalow in Wales into a dreamy serene escape for her family.

Join us as we learn more from Reena about the inspiration behind our newest sofa: Romy.

The design process

“Creating a collection with sofa dot com was a natural choice for me. I have always admired their brand and the quality craftsmanship they bring to their product, their attention to detail, commitment to customer satisfaction and dedication to creating timeless pieces aligned perfectly with my own values as a designer.”

Beginning the design journey with Reena almost 2 years ago, attention to detail has been poured into the collection, to ensure it fulfilled the desire for minimalistic comfort that inspired it.

“Collaborating with sofa.com has been an incredible experience. Working closely with their in-house design team and having the opportunity to see my ideas come to life has been truly fulfilling. Throughout the design process, we went back and forth with prototypes to refine the collection.”

The inspiration

Scandinavian design principles of simplicity, cosiness, nature and functionality form the back bone of the Romy.

“The design of the collection took inspiration from organic forms found in nature. Soft lines enhance this visual appeal and invite people to relax and unwind. The aim was to create a sofa that seamlessly blends with its surroundings, just as nature does.” Ideal for open plan spaces, it’s low back form ensures the horizon of the room is uninterrupted creating a serene space.

“We carefully selected fabrics from linen to chunky weave textures that evoke the feeling of being surrounded by nature. These materials not only look visually appealing but also provide a cosy, inviting and tactile feeling”.

A versatile marvel

The Romy’s modular design contributes significantly to it’s functionality. Available as a full set or as individual modules, the sofa is fully customisable so you can tailor it to your home. This year we’re loving balmy bay windows, fresh warm neutrals, pops of Barbiecore and open spaces made for socialising.

These interior lovers have styled their beautiful handmade pieces exquisitely to create some of our favourite looks this summer season.

Summer commences the launch of the social season; the perfect time to get together with friends and family. Our sizeable Long Island is the ultimate destination for squeezing in all your loved ones ready to settle in for an evening of wholesome entertainment. Plus as a modular design you can maneuver the sofa sections around to create a more sociable space. The griege interior hues are sublime for a fresh summer look, which @2711_interiors spruces up with yellow toned cushions. Using a neutral colour palette means when the leaves turn golden you can refresh with richer tones accessories.

A good nights sleep is essential to maintain our energy during the long summer days. @beyondtheblankcanvas has created a beautiful sleep sanctuary with our Bella bed in our Olive Cotton Matt Velvet for added indulgence. The beds flute detailing and background of paneled walls create a depth to the room, with touches of gold hardware that contribute to the warm welcoming space. The addition of bedside eucalyptus infuses the room with a fresh aroma with a candle on the opposite to create some nighttime ambience.

In many homes the kitchen is the heart of their living space. Where family members pull up a stool to snack, or friends gather to chat while you prep a delicious meal. A vogue home with Amy Bell

Fashion and lifestyle guru Amy Bell is known for her classic yet eclectic style which showers her Instagram feed and weaves into her home leaving us with interior envy. Enjoying two of our sociable styles: our Larsen Sofa Bed and Oswald Corner Sofa, Amy’s priority was finding designs that work for hosting, as well as putting comfort first.

Dishing her top tips for hosting, how to find pieces you love and how to add some flair to your home, dive in to be inspired…

Amy’s interior

Building an aesthetic feed curated with dreamy outfits and lustworthy travel adventures, Amy’s home is no exception to her first-class taste.

With so many ways to describe her style, we challenged her to sum up her interior inclinations in three words: “Ooh that’s a toughie! Colourful for sure, eclectic (I think you’d need about 50 different adjectives to describe our house) and, I’m going to cheat a little bit for the last one, inspired-by-my-mum. She’s always had the best eye for interiors so my love for it grew from there. My style’s now a bit more bananas than hers (or ‘adventurous’ as my Mum would say) but, overall, we’re often drawn to very similar pieces and homes”.

“A lot of our house is still a work in progress – a few of the rooms are still in need of rugs, light shades and art which will make a huuuge difference – but it’s been really nice taking it slowly and not rushing any decisions.”

Finding inspiration

The world of interiors can be overwhelming; so to discover a style that reflects your personality and to translate that to your own home can be challenging. After moving into her property over a year ago, Amy had a blank canvas to splash her style on, so we found out where she began styling her home…

“I’m big into Pinterest and making little saved boards on Instagram. Mood boards I find really handy for pulling a room together and the best piece of interiors inspo that my Mum passed down was, if you feel overwhelmed, take one piece (anything as small as a cushion to something larger like a sofa) and start there and build your room around it.

“I love Lucy Williams’ home, she’s got the best eye for interiors and her house looks so warm and welcoming in every photo she shares. Matilda Goad very much has my dream home (and homeware!) and I love everything Emma Ainscough does. My Pinterest is VERY Emma heavy.”

Tips to soulful style

Style overlaps both fashion and interiors, yet a bold fashion choice can often be easier to make than liberal home décor that has to last a lot longer than a day. “Both my fashion and interiors style could be described as eclectic with splashes of colour throughout… but with a good mix classic/neutral pieces thrown in for good measure.”

“My main tip would be don’t be scared! Start with a little bit of colour, say a candle or a print, and see how you feel from there. Colour doesn’t necessarily need to be bright, clashing prints (although I do really admire people who pull this off with aplomb), you can go for completely neutral bases and then add little pops of colour here and there that can be easily changed if you’re not feeling it.”

“Start saving images of homes you like who do it well and see how you can bring it into your own home and, if you’re still uncertain, start with a little digital moodboard and see how it goes from there! And don’t be afraid to make mistakes – it happens to the best of us and nothing is permanent (also a great life motto whilst we’re at it!)”

Found the one(s)

Boasting both our Larsen Sofa Bed in Oyster Bouclé and our Oswald Corner Sofa in Meadow, Amy has opted for sociable styles that suit her lifestyle. “We wanted the living room to feel really homely as it’s where we spend most of our down-time and the Oswald’s helped with just that! We’ve got lots of wood (both furniture and flooring) in the room so it’s all come together really nicely to have a very welcoming, cosy feel after a long day.”

When it comes to hosting, having an option for guests to stay overnight always helps make people feel more at welcome, negating any stress of how to get home. Amy praises her Larsen: “It’s the best sofa bed out there! Super comfortable both as a sofa and a bed – the first people we had try it out came through excitedly to tell us that it was the comfiest sofa bed they’d ever slept in. However, plot twist, they’re both teenagers. So, although delighted with the feedback, our creaky old backs were still cautious…

“Next to try it: some family members in their 50s. Now we’re talking. I’m very happy to report they came through with the same feedback the following morning! And the fact it folds back up into such a lovely sofa when we’re not using it as a bed is a real bonus. The boucle fabric has a really calm feel to it and is a great neutral base for being a bit more experimental with cushions/throws/art etc.”

Wholesome hosting

Hosting in our own homes where loved ones can unwind often creates space for special moments and memories to last a lifetime… “We always just tell our family to make our house their own! I don’t ever want anyone to feel like they can’t touch anything/sit anywhere etc so, as soon as you’re in the door, it’s your house as much as ours.”

“Another hosting tip – always have chocolate in. And teabags. Especially when it comes to my family. I also like to enforce board games on guests at least once during their stay but… that maybe does not a good host make (that’s when the chocolate comes in handy, it makes for an excellent bribe).

“The main thing we knew was that we wanted a sociable sofa; one that could fit family and friends on no bother when they came to visit. And that’s exactly what we got with the Oswald! It fits 4 adults comfortably (5 when we’re squeezing in for a film) and really is the heart of the living room.”

While hosting for others is fulfilling, it’s easy to forget creating a warm, welcoming environment for ourselves. Balancing work, travel, and our social lives can be a difficult task so it’s important to keep little tricks up your sleeve to help make your home feel like a sanctuary.

As an influencer Amy often has a busy schedule so is a maestro in the department: “I try and unpack as soon as I get in – it’s tough at the time but always feels so great to get it done and out of the way. Candles, lots of candles. Always good for a mellow vibe. And changing the bed before we leave so we’re coming back to fresh sheets is always a real treat!”

At home with…Olivia Rubin

Our new Olivia Rubin Prism Stripe on one of our most loved sofas: Holly 2.5 seat

Last week marked the launch of our exclusive collaboration with iconic British fashion designer Olivia Rubin. With a penchant for rainbows, the brand’s collections are renowned for their happy, uplifting designs and joyful signature aesthetic. Founded in 2017, the positive, inclusive brand is all about bringing some joie de vivre to the everyday and this is exactly the inspiration behind the silky soft 100% cotton Prism Stripe fabric…brightening our homes one rainbow stripe at a time.

Exploring her beautiful London property, we delve into what draws her to colour, her inspiration when it comes to her home and her tips and tricks to creating a happy home.

Statement suite paired with muted walls and period features for a clean elevated look

Of an era

Most Victorian period properties like Olivia’s, boast intricate detailing with the combined influence of Italianate style and Regency trends weaving into domestic architecture at the time. In recent seasons we have seen this translate into panelling, ceiling medallions and coving, to add an air of sophistication and old school quality to our interiors. “I still am very much in love with my house as we have been there for less than a year. I particularly love the original tiled hallway and the mix of old and new design features that give it so much personality.”

2023 has seen boring blank spaces replaced with charming characteristics that add personality and elevate interiors. “We were lucky enough to have bought it when it had just been interior designed to my exact style. Lots of colour and mixes of texture with an eclectic feel.”

“We have some amazing vintage finds and statement pieces to jazz up the muted tones.” While colours outside of the neutral palette can brighten up a home, pairing these with softer hues avoids a sensory overload and perpetuates a sanctuary where you can unwind.

“I wanted our new home to feel special yet homely. I’m not a fan of homes that are so pristine that you feel that you can’t ‘live’ in them. Each room either has a signature colour or wallpaper and a unique ambiance.”

Sofa.com X Olivia Rubin

Our ultra-stylish new collaboration with Olivia Rubin is available on three of our most loved ranges, Holly, Bluebell and Isla. Made from 100% cotton, this fashion forward fabric is the perfect way to brighten up your interiors with a playful and standout look. “The rainbow stripe has been a signature of the brand for many years now. Inspired by the colours of the rainbow it has become an iconic part of the collections that felt naturally suited to some stand out furniture pieces.”

“There was nothing else like it out there in the interior world and being so eye catching we both thought it has great potential and would brighten homes in the UK. Colour is key in both my fashion and my home in complimentary ways. The colours I wear I don’t necessarily want in my home, so we adjusted the stripe fabric to compliment more neutral homes.”

Add a splash of colour to your home with Olivia Rubin’s vivid accessories

Accessorise your statement

If you’re a newbie to colour then a vivid statement piece may lie a bit too far outside of your comfort zone, yet there are always other options to share new shades with your home. “I think it is so easy to introduce colour even if you’re not a colour lover like me! Interior accessories like cushions, throws, lamps or even artwork can brighten the home or if you’re brave enough go full on with walls or I love a printed wallpaper or tile situation.” Or perhaps a Prism Stripe footstool strikes a happy medium.

This year focus surrounds creating a sanctuary that reflects personal style and a practical environment we can truly unwind in. “I love sinking into my sofa in the evening and watching a good series with a rainbow cuppa! It’s such personal taste but just filling in with the little creature comforts that make you happy. For me that’s cool artwork, statement furniture and I have a thing for lots of printed cushions piled upon my bed!”

Springtime hosting with Agnieszka Dmochowska

Interior guru Agnieszka Dmochowska @agi_at_59 opts for bold earth tones to bring the outside in

The beginning of spring is almost upon us, the perfect time to refresh our homes so it’s ready for brighter days ahead. In the world of interiors, spring this year is packed with vivid hues, from earthy shades to every variation of olive, sage and fern, ready to perfectly complement the fresh scent of daffodils, tulips and hyacinth.

Agnieszka Dmochowska’s newly renovated open plan living space is perfectly in vogue. In her quest to create ‘an extension of the garden’ with her kitchen expansion, Agi has ticked all the boxes with her bold verdant kitchen, natural texture of her Kingsley oak dining table, and sunny scattering of flowers. If you’re looking to refresh your home this spring, or are looking for some hosting and tablescaping inspiration, then dive into Agi’s tips and tricks…

Agi’s beautiful open plan space works perfectly for hosting and family time

Optimising open plan living

When it comes to open plan living, it can often be hard to create a cohesive space that links together your priorities and doesn’t end up in disarray. Agi advises to “have a good think about what you need from the new space and don’t try to squeeze too much into it as it will become too crammed and loose the sense of space and openness. We are all different and some things that work in other peoples houses won’t necessarily work for you. For example, when I was designing our kitchen everyone was telling me I need to either place the hob or a sink on the island but I was adamant I want to keep it appliance free as we often use it for kids arts and crafts projects, so always stick to your gut feeling and don’t let the so-called experts convince you otherwise.

Also, decorating an open plan space is a bit more tricky than doing up a single room. Make sure you consider all elements of it and when zoning out the spaces within the extension (i.e. dining area/kitchen/living space, etc.). Make sure they still feel cohesive and ‘talk’ to each other.”

With brighter spring days approaching, natural light is vital in uplifting our homes. “By extending the house into our small back garden we wanted to make them both ‘bigger’. I know it might sound completely bonkers but we went with large crittall style windows at the back of the extension and that way you kind of hide where the house ends and the garden starts so you make both look optically bigger and you make the most of the space on offer.”

With a flurry of celebrations approaching in Spring/Summer – Mother’s day, Easter, Father’s day and this year, the Coronation – it’s great to create a space that works for hosting our loved ones. “We often see friends that come to visit with their children so having a large open plan space where everyone can use a different corner of it without disturbing one another is perfect. So whilst grown ups enjoy the more formal meal at the table the little people can freely run around in the other parts of the extension and everyone has a great time.”

Our unique Coco dining chairs add a pop of personality to the space

Agi’s sofa.com style

“I absolutely adore the unusual shape of sofa.com’s Coco dining chairs. They are so sexy!  I always had a soft spot for mustard yellow so the Nefertiti fabric is perfect and the fact it’s 100% cotton matt velvet adds that little bit of luxury. I still feel like we are at a restaurant when using them. They are also soooo comfy.”

“When planning the new space I really wanted to make sure it doesn’t look like large square box with a shiny showroom kitchen in it. Hence I always knew that everything we go for must add personality to the space. I love that sofa.com’s Kingsley dining range combines the modern practicality with some rustic – almost farmhouse – chic.”

“Having a larger table is also great as we can fit all the guests around it so the Kingsley table is perfect for us!”. Instead of gathering a hotchpotch of chairs on social occasions, our Kingsley Dining table and matching bench are perfect for adapting to your party size.

50 shades of green

Rising in popularity in the last couple years, biophilic design has taken the interior world by storm with the beauty of the natural world creating a calm and tranquil space.

“I thought a lot about colours that would work best in there and as we want it to be ‘an extension of the garden space’ the natural, earthy tones seemed like the obvious choice. The multitude of plants is again a ‘continuation of the garden’ and part of the so-called ‘bring the outside in’ trend. It all will hopefully make more sense and flow beautifully together when we will get the garden sorted but that’s our project for this year, so watch this space.”

“We have our good old Izzy sofa in olive green velvet with a matching Georgette footstool in the extension and they work perfectly with all the other greens and earthy tones in there. Plus, they are still mega comfy so perfect for reading a book or browsing internet.”

Vivid colours can often lie outside of people’s comfort zone with the worry that the joy that such a bold scheme brings may be short-lived. Yet with a change of accessories, it can keep the room feeling fresh. “With regards to changing décor for different seasons, I usually do it mostly with fresh seasonal flowers, a reshuffle of cushions/blankets and a change of tablecloth. Sometimes I add different artwork too.”

Tablescaping that creates a feast for the eyes

Entertain in style

Playing host can often mean fluttering around preparing nibbles and topping up tipples so much so that you miss out on the most important part of hosting…entertaining. “The part of the open plan living appeal is the fact that you don’t miss out while preparing the meals in the kitchen, you are still very much part of the action. You can cook while still chatting to everyone.”

“Tablescapes are a perfect way to express your personality, so just go for it. And every table styling needs some seasonal flowers or greenery that brings it all to life. Don’t be afraid to add colour and to mix things up! There’s nothing wrong with mismatched plates or mixing modern pieces with vintage ones as long as it all flows together nicely.”

“In terms of creating the right ambience, lighting is extremely important. We made sure we have a lot of different lamps scattered around the space so they definitely help to create the beautiful atmosphere. Also, I can’t imagine a good party without candles on the table, some lovely music in the background and lots of yummy food.”
