The best furniture for a small space

Less room doesn’t have to mean less style. With clever ways to furnish even the smallest of spots, there’s a solution for every compact living room and awkward corner space. We’ve chosen some of our best designs that work perfectly in smaller homes where space is in short supply.

Sofas

Whitby

In skinny living rooms, consider a sofa style with narrow or no arms. It can be a way to maximise your lounging area while minimising the overall footprint the sofa occupies. Choosing one with plump cushions keeps it cosy, even if the overall dimensions are modest.

Our Whitby sofa can be built to whichever size you need by adding or taking away units. Its modular design allows you to create any arrangement, including asymmetrical shapes, and is also available as a sofa bed.

You may think an L-shaped sofa would make your living room feel cramped, but because it’s a single piece of furniture, it’s actually a great option for a confined space. When pushed to the edge of the room, it will keep all your seating confined to one area, with plenty of room for family and friends without the need for space-hungry armchairs. Here, neat side tables can double as stools if necessary and can easily be tucked out of the way when required.

Elvis

When furniture is streamlined and open, it allows you to see the space around it making the room appear larger. Retro-styled furniture has simple lines, which allows the eye to travel around the room without getting stuck on a particular feature.

Our Elvis sofa was inspired by mid-century modern style with a fuss-free design and smart, wooden legs. Mid-century designs are great because they can be dressed up or down depending on your taste, with some simply styling.

If you choose to upholster Elvis in a neutral fabric try adding other mid-century accessories around your space to bring the retro look to life. Alternatively, you could let the design speak for itself and opt for a bold and striking fabric.

Fingal

When it comes to space saving, take notes from the Scandis who have mastered the art of compact living solutions.

With a name that originally derives from the Scandinavians, our Fingal sofa has a minimalistic and slim line design that plays heavily on its Nordic roots. Uninterrupted lines create a simple silhouette to smarten up any room, whilst two loose, feather-filled seat cushions add unequivocal comfort.

For living areas that don’t have space for two full-sized sofas, consider swapping in a love seat – a sofa/armchair hybrid that’s (just) big enough for two. Fingal can shrink down all the way to a loveseat size meaning it can easily slot into any awkward nooks and crannies, bay window spaces, or difficult corner areas.

Accent chairs

Large armchairs may be great for curling up in, but they also take up lots of floor space. In a compact living room, choose smaller accent chairs that will make a big style statement despite their size. And if you move into a larger space in the future, a pair will create stylish extra seating around a coffee table, make great bedroom chairs or can be used to flank a console table in a hallway.

Betty & Peggy

Mid-century design continues to bring curves and colour to contemporary homes. Our Betty and Peggy chairs draw their inspiration from cocktail chairs of the ‘50s and ‘60s. Both feature slightly tapered legs and look beautiful in luxe fabrics, such as velvet which lends extra softness. Try styling with contrasting cushions that are easy to swap in and out depending on the season. Their petite size means they can easily be shifted aside when needed.

Claude & Jethou

Alternatively, if you have slightly more space, try our Claude or Jethou armchair. Luxurious tufting and a scrolled back give these two designs a classic look that can pull off any type of fabric.

Both the Claude and Jethou are available in 'sofa' sizes which are wider than their chair counterpart, but aren't nearly as large a full sofa.

Claude’s armless design means it can slot into smaller spaces and Jethou’s has a slim yet tall frame which makes it feel much larger than it really is.

Bed in a box

We introduced our new bed-in-a-box earlier this year which, by day, can simply act as an extra seat for visiting guests but, by night, it can be transformed into a generously sized single bed turning any room into the occasional guest bedroom whenever needed. Use it in child’s bedroom for the occasional sleepover or in a study where a full size sofa bed may not quite fit.

Henry

Henry's simple and fuss-free design features a plump seat cushion and easy-to-use pull-out mechanism allowing you to quickly turn a space you didn't even know you had into a comfortable place for family and friends to stay. A stylish alternative to the blow-up mattress, its memory foam mattress guarantees a comfortable night’s sleep.

You forgot the Aissa corner chaise! We have one in our small cottage sitting room and it has transformed the space! With no space 'wasted' with wide arms, It easily seats 4 even 5 if we get cosy! Mostly it's just the two of us and the dog. So comfy and smart. Being a bit lower than our last sofa it also makes our low beamed ceilings appear higher. Wish we had bought it years ago! Ps the delivery team were super too!
