Top Films of 2011 (to watch from the comfort of your sofa)

Nov 23, 2011

Now that winter has firmly set in and it’s getting dark before 5pm, we thought we’d take a look at five of the best films released this year. Whether you’re watching it on a good old DVD or streaming onto an iPad, there are few better ways to stave off the winter gloom than snuggling up on your sofa with a good film. You might disagree with our choices but we’ve tried to make it as broader a church as possible – covering many genres.

Bridesmaids

A contender for best film of the year? Certainly the best comedy, this neat ensemble film is brilliantly written and cast with lesser known acting talents all putting in scene stealing performances. Most importantly for a comedy, it is really funny and while produced by the makers of Knocked Up and Superbad, Bridesmaids has a unique voice of its own. It cleverly avoids the girl-twee clichés associated with a typical romantic comedy and is both brutal and sensitive when it needs to be. Men will learn of the apparent horror that getting chosen to be a Bridesmaid entails, while women can be proud of a high quality comedy that easily competes with the “fratpack”. (more…)

Award-winning Pattern designer Emily Sutton joins forces with sofa.com

Nov 22, 2011
Edinburgh College of Art’s talented graduate Emily Sutton has taken the design world by storm and we are very pleased to be featuring her print in our Design Lab collaboration with St Jude’s. Taking her inspiration from the wildlife of the Yorkshire countryside and fusing this with an intrigue in folk art museum displays and lithographed children’s books cultivated during a spell in Rhode Island, she has created the idiosyncratic print ‘Curiosity Shop’, seen here in her isolated Yorkshire studio.

In the run up to Christmas we’ve got our eyes peeled for suggestions for great Christmas presents, and we’ll be bringing you some of our top tips for online and offline shopping.

First up, the online shop at the Tate.

Gone are the days of terrible gift shops at galleries with nothing more than a few postcards and a pot of branded jam, these days the shops at galleries are a serious business and they can be a fantastic hunting ground for really unusual, sometimes limited edition, pieces. You’d expect great style from the Tate, and that’s what we think you get.

1. Finding stylish Christmas cards that aren’t a shrine to bad design and toe-curling messages can be hard. We think the Tate have cracked it with these cards using a design by Ashley Havinden - Christmas gets a stylish, mid-century treatment. £5.00 for 6 cards.
